Best Options for Betting on Baseball

Betting on Baseball can be very simple, but let’s talk about some of the more unusual ways of betting, and we’ll also discuss the typical stuff that bettors wager on.

1)First Five innings. If you want to avoid the bullpen blowing leads late in games and just want to rely on the starting pitcher, this is the way to go. If you select Team A and they are leading after five innings, you get the win. If it’s 2-2, then it’s a push and you get your money back. If Team A is trailing after five innings, you lose. There is also an F5 Run line, so if you pick the Dodgers -0.5, they must be winning after five innings. If the total is 4.5, then both teams must score five runs or more.

2)Betting on the money line is the most popular wager or at least it was before all these options came about. If you just want to pick a winner, there is no reason you shouldn’t pick Team A -130 over Team B. The problem comes when the money line is -175 or more and then if you stick to big favorites, you are usually going to lose in the long run. You can earn a bigger profit by taking some underdogs and smaller favorites. The stronger pitchers are normally going to be the biggest favorites, especially against bad teams.

3)Picking over/unders is another big option in wagering on baseball. The key to picking totals, especially for outdoor stadiums, is the weather. Specifically, the wind, especially at this time of the year, where the weather can be under 60 degrees in a lot of places. Always remember to check to see if the wind is blowing out (say 10-20 mph) and that happens a lot in the Midwest, especially Chicago, Detroit and Kansas City. Picking an over in Denver is fine, but the odds are usually going to be 10-11 runs due to the thin air and the history of high scoring games at Coors Field in Colorado.

4)A popular option in baseball is picking the run line. Usually the run line is -1.5/+1.5. It’s a nice option if the money line is -175 or higher. The only issue is to remember that about ¼ of the games are decided by one run. But you can get a better payout than a moneyline.

5)Finally, one of the most popular options over the last five years is player props. Strikeouts and hits are very popular nowadays. But the key is studying the numbers and checking out the lineups, which are usually posted about two hours before the game. Sites like ESPN.com, have splits for starting pitchers (don’t choose rookies) and they also have batters vs. pitchers. So if you have one veteran pitcher and he’s struggling against 2-3 guys in his career, I’d look at home runs, which are usually +200 or higher and hits or even total bases if there is a good value. I’d stay away from -120 or higher odds when it comes to prop bets. Look for good values, but also check out their numbers against the current starting pitcher. When it comes to strikeouts, some pitchers own certain teams, and their strikeout numbers are high against them.
