Don’t bet against these teams, but the oddsmakers may also pump up these lines if they know these teams are playing to get off the bubble. No 19 Miami-Ohio is also 53rd in the NET Rankings and undefeated this season, which may not be a lock for the tournament. They might have to win the MAC Tournament, but they could also be laying too many points given their situation.

We’ve come to the point in college basketball where March Madness is upon us. The mid-major college basketball tournaments also have tipped off, and next week, we’ll see the Power Five leagues like the Big East, ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and SEC.

As a bettor, information is not readily available for some of these “smaller” conferences. When it comes to handicapping the matchups, you need to know more than just who is the better team.

There are sites out there, like KenPom.com, WarrenNolan.com, and Evanmiya.com, that can help with handicapping. For example, let’s say ODU is playing Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Tournament. Georgia Southern is a 2-point favorite and the total is 159. ODU is 245th overall, 236th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 245th in Adjusted Defense on KenPom. Georgia Southern is ranked 266th, with an adjusted offense of 196th and a defense of 306th. I could lean towards the over, but you can check the pace of play (Adjusted Tempo), finding out that Georgia Southern is 28th in pace of play and ODU is 92nd. With0ut looking at the other sites for more analytics, I’d lean towards the over and possibly ODU. That’s, of course, without looking at some of the intangibles like injuries, momentum, revenge and motivation.

Sites like KenPom can give you the projected final score and win probability. If KenPom projects a certain team to win by nine and they are a 5-point favorite, that suggests some potential value in the line.

Football doesn’t have much of an off-season anymore. The season just ended in February and all eyes are on the start of Free Agency, which begins on March 11 at 4pmET.

Bettors who like to place future bets, hold on until free agency and the NFL Draft is over. For example, just as I’m typing this, the Chicago Bears dealt away wide receiver D.J. Moore to Buffalo. Moore is about to turn 29 and his numbers are declining, though he did just have 98 catches in 2024 and 06 in 2023. He certainly should help Josh Allen in Buffalo.

Most teams want defensive help and the first thought is pass rushing. EDGE Trey Hendrickson is the top pass rusher available after registering 35 sacks in 2023 and 24, before playing just seven games for Cincinnati last season.

Jaelan Philips is another big EDGE, who played for Miami last season before being traded to the Eagles. In five seasons, he has 28 sacks and 150 pressures.

Baltimore center Tyler Linderbaum is just 26 and is expected to receive the biggest salary for a center ever.

When you’re picking the early conference tournaments (mid-majors), you can also pick the winner of the tournaments and get a pretty good price from some of the books like DraftKings. For example, DK has the Atlantic Sun or ASUN favorite as Austin Peay +205. Central Arkansas is listed at +250, despite both teams finishing 15-3 in the conference.

But when you look at KenPom, Central Arkansas is slightly stronger at 155 than Austin Peay at 164. If you’re looking for a dark horse, Queens (190 KenPom) pushes the tempo (61^st) and has won four of five games, with the only loss coming at Central Arkansas on Feb. 28. Take Queens as the best bet at +400.

In the Sun Belt, Troy is 12-6 (+170) and then there are six teams at 11-7, tied for second. South Alabama (+1100) is the team to look out for in that conference tournament. They are 8-6 on the road. They’ve also had some very tough losses, falling in overtime to Texas State and by four at Marshall. They also have one of the league’s most explosive scorers in Chaze Harris, who averages 18.9 points per game and gets to the line early and often. Troy is the favorite in this conference, but they’ve won just five of their last 10 games. If you want a long shot, go with USA. 

In the Missouri Valley, Belmont (+155, 55 KenPom) is the heavy favorite, but watch out for Northern Iowa (+475, 80 KenPom). They are only 11-9 in the MVC, but they lost to Belmont by just five on the road. This is another team that seems to play better on the road, having won three of their last four. Illinois State (+450) just beat Belmont at home, but they’ve been up and down this season. Go with UNI.

The bottom line is that there is some very good profit-earning potential in the mid-major tournaments. Research is essential for winning, whether it’s just picking the game or the winners of the tournament.

This is a great time of the year! But most bettors feel that conference tournaments are only about next week, when the Power 5 teams begin their journey.

However, this is a great week to make a profit, as most mid-majors begin a journey that is much more important than the P5 guys. Why? Because most teams are from one-bid leagues. You have to win the conference tournament or if you’ve garnered enough success, you’re headed to a consolation postseason tournament like the NIT or CBI.

The Horizon League Tournament begins tonight and the favorite is Wright State (+200 on DK), while Robert Morris (+280) and Oakland (+425) are right behind. 

Why should I bet on these mid-major tournaments?

• The sense of urgency is for every team, while some of the “high majors” are already locked in and may not have that same effort and motivation.
  
  
• The lines are softer than the power conferences.
  
  
• There are better opportunities for informed bettors. Injuries are rarely discussed or mentioned on injury reports for the mid-major conferences. But if you do some digging by looking at GP (Games played), for the top players, you’ll figure out who is injured and who is not.
  
  
• The higher seeds usually get byes, so they get an advantage of playing fewer games, where the lower seeds usually have to play 3 or 4 games in 3 or 4 staight night. Having quality depth is a must in these situations.

Spring training in baseball used to be about players stretching and getting their swings in. The Olympic break is finally over, and what a great performance by the NHL players! There was nothing more exciting than the Gold Medal game won by the U.S. 2-1 in overtime, thanks to a goal from Jack Hughes. 

But now that the Olympics and the long break are over, it’s time for the NHL to return for the final month-and-a-half before the playoffs start on April 19.

In terms of betting, a lot of teams had players dealing with nagging injuries and that should help their chances by getting them back on the ice.  Linemakers also tend to overvalue teams that performed well in the Olympics or undervalue those that performed poorly. At the point where teams desperately need wins, they will ride their number one or hot goaltender, as the backup will see less time. Knowing information about all goaltenders is crucial to making a profit late in the season.

Do you like the tush push? Are you tired of teams playing field positions inside the 50? Should a team get an extra point for kicking a 60-yard or longer field goal?

These are some of the key rule changes for the 2026 UFL, which kicks off on Friday, March 27. Here are the main rule changes in the UFL:

• The “tush push” will be eliminated.
• There will be no punts inside the opponent’s 50-yard line.
• There will be three PAT options: A)One-point conversion (a 33-yard field goal). B)Two-Point conversion (ball placed at the 2-yard line). C)Three-point conversion (ball placed at the 8-yard line).
• One Foot In Bounds. A legal catch will follow the NCAA rules of a player must get one foot in bounds instead of two.

Sharp bettors understand that the UFL lines are usually not adjusted until Week 3 or Week 4 at the earliest. When considering all these changes, that could mean playing a lot of overs, depending on whether the oddsmakers inflate them or not.

Having a 2 and 3-point conversion can also make the game more interesting when it comes to the spread. Underdogs, especially big ones, become more attractive because teams can score nine points in one possession.

The key to winning the second-half and playoffs in the NHL is to figure out which teams are impacted by the Winter Olympics. For example, Florida and Tampa Bay had the most players inthe Olympics and those players could be feeling travel fatigue considering the games just ended on Sunday. This is a lot different than a normal All-Star break, as teams with multiple injuries should also be much healthier and in better shape due to the break. That’s where research and information are key to success.

The NBA just finished its All-Star break, and now teams are jockeying for position for the playoffs, which start in mid-April. March is all about those teams, that are vying for position and those who are tanking or playing out the string. 

There’s also the NFL Draft in late April, and the NFL Combine goes later this week. But while college and the NFL are not playing real games until late August, early September, the UFL will play a regular 10-week schedule starting on March 27.

The 2026 Masters also goes April 9-12 and the WNBA tips off on May 8. There are plenty of betting opportunities aside from March Madness, which will end on April 6. Just because college basketball is over in early April doesn’t mean that betting opportunities end.

As a college basketball bettor, you may know about these Bracketology reports that are readily available on ESPN and CBS. They may not be completely accurate, but they are trying to project which teams will make the NCAA Tournament and their seedings, which ones are on the bubble and which ones (usually last four out) have work to do.

The key factor in picking any basketball game this late in the season is motivation. A team that is on the “bubble” of making the tournament should play harder than most. However, be aware that the books tend to amp up some of the lines for teams that are fighting for their lives. 

For example, ESPN’s Bracketology report had UCLA as the 11th seed before they played against Illinois on Saturday. The Bruins were a 6-point dog at home and were able to pull off the upset in overtime. The Illini had just beaten Utah, a team that was considered more on the bubble than UCLA -101-65 as an 8.5-point favorite. The Saturday line wasn’t adjusted that much, but considering Illinois’ dominance, they may have given UCLA a point or two due to motivation, but the Bruins took care of business.

As you take a look at college basketball odds in the final few weeks before the Big Dance, here are some teams on the bubble or close, that should hae serious motivation: Santa Clara (23-6), New Mexico (21-6), TCU (17-10), Cal (19-8), VCU (21-7), Ohio State (17-10), USC (18-9), Indiana (17-10), Virginia Tech (18-10), Seton Hall (19-9) San Diego State (18-8), Missouri (18-9).
